Paragraph from Paris: You just can’t lose by going to Toulouse.

PARIS (Herald de Paris) – When you want to go somewhere for a nice relaxing family weekend during the February break in France, the family includes a 14-year-ol d boy, and you don’t ski, where do you go? Well, it depends a little on the boy, but you could do a lot worse than Toulouse. For children of all ages, the great attraction of Toulouse is the “Cité de l’espace”, “Space City”, France’s museum of space flight. There is a life-size mock-up of the Mir (the old Russian space station), an IMAX, a planetarium, and lots of hands-on exhibits. You can get there by public transportation from the center of town, and it will keep your teenager very happy for most of a day. Just try not to eat there.

Especially because Toulouse is a great city in which to eat. The food is very good, the servings are copious, and the prices, compared to Paris, are dirt cheap. A whole bottle of a very tasty southwestern French red for 7 euros? In a restaurant? Come on, you’ve got to be kidding! But that’s what the price was at Au Gascon, a place serving wonderful magret de canard, confit de canard, and other southwestern French food at extremely reasonable prices. My son even liked the fried duck gizzards served on a salad.

On the other hand, the guidebooks will tell you about the wonderful cathedrals of Toulouse. Well… they think the cathedral of St. Sernin, the famous one, is super. It’s not. The cathedral of St. Etienne is better, but not wonderful either. The really super church is the convent of the Jacobins, with magnificently tall pillars creating a truly extraordinary space that houses the remains of St. Thomas Aquinas, in a gold-plated casket visible beneath the altar. There is , and a lovely cloister as well.

Overall, you can’t lose by going to well. It also happens to have the gold casket of St Thomas which serves as the altar.
