Washington, DC (Herald de Paris) — A stunning and warm fall day greeted the First Lady and a handful of local students, that joined in the annual fall harvest of the White House Kitchen Garden. The joy on students faces was evident as the First Lady and her guests dug deep, side by side, and burrowed on hands and knees to pluck the ready harvest from the ground. Vegetables such as sweet potatoes, gourds, tomatoes, squash, and peanuts were produced with glee by tiny hands enjoying the great outdoors.
Michelle Obama created the White House Kitchen Garden in 2009, to initiate a conversation on the health and well being of Americans, in particular school children. This national conversation eventually led to the successful “Lets Move” campaign that has brought profound advances to the health of students nationwide. The White House Kitchen Garden supplies food for the First Family and their guests, for official White House events. Significantly, thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables have been shared with Miriam’s Kitchen, a local organization that prepares fresh healthy meals for the homeless.
